Acceptable use Policy

Usage of your Bur.st account must meet the following guidelines. Breaking the guidelines below may result in the immediate removal of your Bur.st account.

  • Bur.st may terminate your account at any point in time without notice for what it feels is a violation of these guidelines.
  • You are responsible for all activities associated with your account. Bur.st cannot protect you from computer virii received via email or otherwise, or hacking or denial of service (DoS) attacks.
  • You are not allowed to use your account for illegal activities such as copyright violations, defamation, harassment, fraud or housing of illegal content (including, but not limited to, pornography without a suitable age verification system).
  • You are not allowed to use the account for interfering with or disrupting other users' access to the Internet or other networks.
  • You are not allowed to use the account for any activities associated with unsolicited bulk email, or "spam".
  • Bur.st technical support is provided on a "use at own risk" basis. Bur.st will not be responsible for any damage or loss resulting from use of information provided by Bur.st support.
  • Your Bur.st account is provided on a "use at own risk" basis. Bur.st will not be responsible for any damage or loss resulting from the use of your account.
  • You shall not use excessive amounts of resources.
  • You may not share accounts. Only the original applicant may use the account.
  • No unauthorized servers: Including but not limited to IRC, MUD, IRC bots/eggdrops, bounce/BNC servers, etc.
  • You may not make excessive use of data transfer, this includes, but is not limited to downloading files and using SSH tunnels. A reasonable guide should be seen as 100MB per month.
  • You are not allowed to be involved in activities that may attract attacks against Bur.st's servers or other users including, but not limited to, IRC flame wars.

Privacy Policy

Although Bur.st is a small not-for-profit organization, and is hence not obliged to follow the Australian Privacy Act and its 2000 Amendment, the vast majority of the act is followed stringently. However, users are not given the choice to interact anonymously with all services in an effort to keep instances of abuse down.

  • Bur.st follows its Privacy Statement just as it expects users to follow the Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Information about a user is disclosed only to third parties who, under Australian law, have permission to access the information under public interest with or without a warrant.
  • Bur.st takes reasonable steps to keep data on users and users' data secure.
  • Users are allowed access to any personal information about them, stored by Bur.st, upon request.
  • Bur.st does not gather or collect sensitive information about, or owned by, any individual.
  • No Bur.st administrator will examine the contents of a user's files or emails without the user's permission, unless network abuse is suspected, in which case directory and file contents may be examined.
  • Bur.st reserves the right to immediately remove user's files that are against the Bur.st AUP, with or without notification.

Domain addition/change
Use this form to add hosting for a new domain or to change an existing domain (eg, move it from the normal web-server to the PHP web-server).

Bur.st subdomain addition/change
Use this form if you would like a Bur.st subdomain.

Extra POP3 mailbox
Use this form if you would like an extra POP3 mailbox.

MySQL access
Use this form if you would like MySQL access for your http://www.bur.st/~user web page. If you were going to use it with an existing or new domain or subdomian, please use the Domain addition/change form or Bur.st subdomain addition/change form.

You will require an account for all extra services.

You are also required to be a donating-user for everything other than:

  • Normal DNS/mail/web domain hosting (of a single domain)
  • Normal DNS/mail/web sub-domain hosting (of a single sub-domain)
  • DNS seconding
